Streamlining and Beautifying the RI DMV Site
This time, my assignment was to choose a complex website that was in dire need of a refresh, both visually and functionally in regards to the information architecture. I racked my brain for a site that garners thousands of visits a day and requires an informed, thoughtful strategy to ensure ease of use. I looked down on my desk and pushed aside an envelope from the RI DMV letting me know I needed to renew my registration...yay! I had a great project to work on, (boo, I had to renew my registration). I began by researching the DMV websites for every U.S. state to pick out the best elements to incorporate, and the worst to avoid. From there I built sitemaps of the current architecture and identified opportunities to streamline content, and organize categories. When developing a style guide for the site, I knew I wanted to utilize unique bright colors so users would have a more positive, emotional experience researching, and completing transactions with the DMV. When putting together my plan I knew it would be important to highlight the most popular online services, in hopes of reducing the amount of visitors to DMV branch locations. I achieved this by creating intuitive call-to-action buttons, content tiles that repeated important services, and a greater emphasis placed on utilizing online services.
